Who has trouble doing eyeliner?

Pretty much every person who sits in my chair says, “I’d love to wear eyeliner but I have the hardest time applying it.” Well tonight I’m here to tell four things that I suggest to people who are trying to up their eyeliner game.

  1. In the very beginning, forgo wearing eyeliner during the day. When you get home for the day (and don’t plan on going out), put your eyeliner on. Seems a little silly, but not having a time constraint will help you stay relaxed and not rush because, darling, perfection cannot be rushed. Doing this for about a week will get you much more comfortable. Once you feel like it’s easier, you can add it to your morning routine.
  2. If you’re applying your eyeliner with a brush (like for a gel based liner), make sure your brush is CLEAN. Having a clean brush is essential when you want to have a clean, crisp line. A little fleck of yesterday’s eyeliner can only have the potential of putting a thorn in your side.
  3. Have a clean-up plan in case you make a mistake. I swear by these Almay makeup remover swabs on my vanity and in my kit. If you really really mess up your eyeliner, you’ll only need this basically use as an eraser. It won’t leave the skin oily and you can put makeup on right over it.
  4. Position yourself in the best way to apply it. Looking down into a magnified mirror will give you the best view of what you’re doing. Even easier if you apply while resting your elbow on a surface to help steady your nervous hand.
  5. Lastly, give yourself a little credit. As with everything, you’re not going to be a master at eyeliner the first, second or third try and that’s OKAY! I wasn’t either. Luckily it’s makeup and not a tattoo.
